Time to Focus

I struggled with deciding which topic to write about this week. I’ve had quite a few things on my mind. When I was trying to pick one topic my mind seemed to be going in too many directions. I couldn’t focus. So I asked God to help me focus, and there it was…this week’s topic.

This world has become so fast-paced, and we have so many things demanding our attention that some days I feel like my head is spinning.

If we don’t focus, we end up running in too many directions, or no direction at all.

I am a list maker. I like the feeling of crossing things off as I complete them. I have realized though that in order to be more productive, I need to focus on one item at a time and not the whole list.

Let’s take cleaning the house as an example. Lately I have noticed I get distracted when picking things up. I put items in their proper areas, and then I get distracted by what needs done in that area. Before I know it, I feel like I have been all over the house doing a whole lot of nothing. Several things are partially done, but nothing has been completed.

This is quite frustrating when I go back to my list and realize I can’t cross anything off because I haven’t actually completed any of the tasks.

The problem: I lacked FOCUS!

I was trying to do too many things at once, which led to nothing being completed. I realized I needed to focus on one task at a time. Check the list. Complete a task. Move to the next item. This process is simple and gets much more accomplished, which leaves me feeling less frazzled.

Friends, this concept isn’t just for cleaning house. It applies to life in general. You can have many goals, but you cannot give your all to all of them all of the time.

It’s time to focus. I have been doing too many things. I still keep those other goals written down, but right now there is one goal that is getting my focus. There is one goal that I am digging in and accomplishing. The others can be worked on in small doses, but until this goal is achieved, everything else is “on the back burner.”

What do you need to focus on? You may need to put blinders on so you can only look ahead at that goal. Don’t look right or left. Don’t get distracted by things that don’t need your attention right now.  Look straight ahead.

I encourage you to focus this week. I encourage you to focus more from here on out. Finish what you start. Set time aside specifically for what you need to do, and stick to it.

If you are having trouble focusing, take it to the King. Shut everything off. Sit down. Then ask God for help. You might be surprised at what meditation and prayer can do for you when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
